OpenAI launches SearchGPT: Challenging Google's search dominance

OpenAI quietly launched an AI search engine called SearchGPT, which outperformed Google and Perplexity in demonstrations. This product has the potential to achieve the "search engine reinvention" that Google's AI Overview failed to accomplish, and may pose a challenge to Google's dominant position in search.

OpenAI announces the launch of an AI search engine called Search GPT, officially entering the search market and challenging Google's dominant position.

According to the Financial Times, OpenAI is ready to attack Google's $175 billion search business market.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced this news on social media, stating that "there's room for improvement in today's search functionality."

Altman expressed his satisfaction with SearchGPT, considering it better than traditional search, even saying "I'm shocked at how quickly I've adapted to it!"

SearchGPT's functionality will also be integrated into ChatGPT. Currently, SearchGPT is only open for internal testing to 10,000 users, while others need to apply on the official website. Altman stated that alpha testing will be open to paid users next week.

SearchGPT directly competes with existing search services like Perplexity, Google, and Bing. It can access real-time information and has partnerships with major news organizations, preparing to disrupt the search engine market.

From the official demonstration, SearchGPT not only integrates real-time web information but also includes features similar to "multi-step reasoning." It can answer specific time and space questions, providing accurate information and relevant links, far surpassing traditional search engines.

SearchGPT adopts a conversational interface and supports multi-turn dialogues. Users only need to express their search needs as if talking to a real person to get real-time responses. It combines real-time information with AI's understanding, reasoning, and summarization capabilities, making search simple and efficient.

Compared to traditional search, SearchGPT has two clear advantages:

  1. Search results are faster and more accurate, fully leveraging the text capabilities of large language models.

  2. It can not only search for results but also continue conversations on details and extended topics, sharing context.

SearchGPT likely uses the Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) method to reduce hallucinations, improve credibility, and generate content sources.

Overall, SearchGPT revolutionizes the traditional search model, providing users with a smarter and more convenient search experience. Its launch marks the arrival of the AI search era and will have a significant impact on the search engine market.
