AI Native Rise: 9-Year-Old Child Author Earns $20,000 Writing Books Using Large Language Models

Parents' question: What do they want me to do?

Meng Meng is a 9-year-old primary school student in Beijing who wrote a novel titled "AI Youth: The Mars Survival Challenge" with the help of AI, earning 20,000 yuan in royalties. The book tells the story of the protagonist Meng Meng participating in a "Mars Survival Challenge Camp" activity and independently escaping danger to return to Earth in virtual reality.

The scene descriptions in the book were mainly generated by AI. Meng Meng used AI tools such as ChatGPT and Zhipu Qingyan to assist in the creation. He obtained professional knowledge by asking AI questions, turned his conceived plots into prompts for AI to generate sentences, and then used AI to check grammar and polish the text.

The entire creative process went through three versions of the outline:

  1. The first version featured ChatGPT as the protagonist but was abandoned due to inconvenience of use.

  2. The second version aimed to introduce the history of AI development but was rejected as the content was too professional.

  3. The final version was determined with "Mars Survival Challenge" as the main storyline.

Meng Meng also used the AI tool DALLE-2 to generate cartoon avatar illustrations for the book.

Within a month of publication, the book went into reprint, selling over 6,000 copies and is on its way to becoming a bestseller. Meng Meng's creative experience demonstrates how children can use AI for creation and has also sparked thoughts on children's education in the AI era.
